To be fair, sales reps from Thompson BMW and Thompson Lexus were very polite and courteous. However, buying my 4Runner from Thompson Toyota was not fun. Anyway, we got past it during the sale but the discussions related to this "certified" issue were ridiculous.
I've already mentioned that Greg McCahill tried to buy the truck back from us at a slightly higher rate (which of course he would resell for almost double the amount). I also spoke with Julius Libutti, the General Sales Manager, as a follow up several times. I'll describe these interactions in upcoming posts.

The Thompson lie cost me thousands of dollars
Anyway, to continue with the story, we accepted a very low trade in value for the vehicle after we found out it was in an accident. We were disappointed to have been deceived by The Thompson Organization, Thompson Toyota specifically. I mean, when you ask if it was in an accident and you're presented with a CarFax, you'd think it's safe, right? Also, did I mention that the truck was certified?
Nonetheless, back at the Honda dealership, my one-year old son was getting tired and my pregnant wife was exhausted. Although the retail value is near $10,000 (trade in value was approximately $7,000), I accepted $3,800. And I had to negotiate to get that! After all, the 4Runner didn't even have a clean title.

The real CarFax from Keenan Honda
So, when I finally decided to trade in the Toyota 4Runner, to my surprise, Keenan Honda offered me much less than I what anticipated.
Here's the CarFax they showed me. The highlighted area shows that the truck was in an accident. It was even towed! There are parts that have different VIN numbers.

Carfax from Thompson Toyota
Below is the carfax Thompson Toyota gave me when I purchased the 1999 Toyota 4Runner. As you can see, the carfax states that the vehicle had never been in an accident.
Guess what, I bought it as a certified vehicle. When I inquired about this recently, Greg McCahill, a Thompson salesperson, said that they knew it had been in an accident. The VIN numbers on the parts don't even match. Of course, when we asked about this at the time of the purchase, they claimed that it hadn't been.

Thompson Toyota knowingly sold me a certified truck that was in an accident
I used to have a lot of faith in The Thompson Organization but not any more! In the past, I have purchased a Lexus from Thompson Lexus and BMW from Thompson BMW. However, my 1999 Toyota 4Runner that I was using as my winter vehicle was a nightmarish experience.
In future posts, I will provide you with details as to what Thompson Toyota did and how they responded. In short, they have cost me thousands of dollars.
If they're willing to do that to a repeat customer, what do you think they would do to you?
